SPANISH FORK, UTAH — After eleven years of extraordinary leadership, Dr. James R. Stewart, Colonel, USAF (Ret.), is stepping down as Executive Director of the Candy Bomber Foundation. As one of the Foundation’s founding leaders, Dr. Stewart has helped shape a hopeful vision into a respected educational nonprofit with impact across Utah, the United States, Europe, and the Pacific.

“What an incredible journey it has been,” said Stewart. “Taking this foundation from a dream among friends to a mission with global reach has been one of the greatest honors of my life.”

Founded to honor the enduring legacy of Colonel Gail S. Halvorsen—the legendary “Candy Bomber” of the Berlin Airlift—the Foundation’s mission is to inspire hope, honor service, and unite generations through education, aviation, and acts of kindness. Under Dr. Stewart’s tenure, the Foundation has expanded STEM and service-learning programs for youth, preserved and shared Halvorsen’s story with communities worldwide, and proven that small acts of kindness can indeed change the world.

Dr. Stewart’s departure as Executive Director does not mark the end of his service. He will continue to support the Foundation in an active leadership and advisory capacity, helping guide its growth, mission fidelity, and long-term impact.

Effective immediately, Lorene Moore assumes the role of Executive Director. A seasoned leader with deep roots in education and nonprofit work, Lorene brings energy, compassion, and strategic focus to the role. Her commitment to Colonel Halvorsen’s values and her passion for youth empowerment make her the right leader for this next chapter.

“Lorene has exactly what this mission needs—vision, integrity, and hands-on leadership,” said Stewart. “I step aside with full confidence in her and great excitement for what comes next.”

The Candy Bomber Foundation extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Stewart for his years of selfless service and proudly welcomes Lorene Moore in her new leadership role as Executive Director.
